A delicious chocolate cake sandwiched and topped with a luscious strawberry and mascarpone cream. Keep romance alive: make this strawberry chocolate heart cake small and just for two or share the love and increase the quantities.
Last year I made a recipe for strawberry fol-de-rol. It was a rich chocolate sponge which was meant to be filled with raspberry coulis, raspberries and cream. Raspberries weren’t in season here in the UK and I wasn’t going to start buying imported ones from Spain. So strawberries it was. Luckily my local green grocer didn’t let me down and Cornish strawberries were in – hoorah!
Strawberry Chocolate Heart Cake
Turns out strawberries and chocolate cake go very well together. So when I bought a punnet of local strawberries this year, I had a strawberry chocolate cake very much in mind.
I had strawberries, I had mascarpone, I had two little heart shaped cake moulds to use and I was in the mood for pink. The strawberry chocolate heart cake I envisaged was also to be my initial stab at We Should Cocoa.
For the cake I adapted the recipe from Baked & Delicious that came with the heart moulds. For the strawberry cream, I threw a few delicious ingredients together which I thought would work well. And they did.
I was really happy with this strawberry chocolate heart cake. CT was happier still as he wasn’t expecting such a show of affection. It’s no exaggeration to say we were both in gastronomic ecstasy.
The strawberry mascarpone cream was sooooo delicious. It was surprisingly light as well as creamy. In fact, it tasted a bit like Angel Delight, only not as artificial nor as sweet. A sure fire winner I will be making again.
It’s also the perfect cake to make for Valentine’s Day, although you won’t get Cornish strawberries in February. Not yet anyway.
Elegance is Not Everything
One thing I was sure of was that my strawberry chocolate heart cake was going to look a little more elegant than the fol-de-rol.
“Oh and can I just say I simply love the way you plonked the four large strawberries onto the ‘roulade’” I haven’t forgotten that comment Dom. The Viking was a little kinder: “Is it a small cake or are they giant strawberries? Either way it looks very tasty.”
This time I quartered the strawberries before “plonking them on top”.

Johanna – as a real cream lover, I find this hard to get my head around 😉 But I guess you could always use yogurt, buttercream or silken tofu instead?
Johanna GGG says
this looks splendid – just the sort of thing that E would love me to whisk up – but I get cream-shy, having hated it for most of my life – though now I appreciate there are some places where it is a must and this looks like one

RhyleysGranny – the good thing about such a wee cake, is it’s really hard to make a pig of yourself 😉
Anna – thank you, I can do it sometimes :-S
Kate – thank you. Down with the “romance is dead’ brigade!
Grazing Kate – it’s certainly the time of year to cover cakes with strawberries and raspberries. Anything specific in mind?

That CT just gets luckier and luckier. What a lovely cake to present to him. You have completely sold me with the Angel Delight thing. I haven’t tasted it in years but as it was the staple dessert in our house for many a year I have very fond memories. I daren’t try it again in case my fond memories are dashed. I will make your strawberry cream instead!
