Easter will soon be upon us and the search for Easter eggs is on. Look no further. We have a veritable Easter Feaster for you here with this review of several high quality chocolate Easter eggs.
Ever since I can remember, I’ve known that there’s no such thing as too many chocolate eggs for Easter. When I was a child, chocolate was a rare treat, so I looked forward to Easter with eager anticipation. I’d make my chocolate Easter eggs last over the entire Easter holidays and beyond. That seasonal excitement has never left me and I’m sure that’s part of the reason I like to celebrate Easter.
Of course, Easter isn’t just about the chocolate. It’s the harbinger of spring, which is why we celebrate with eggs and bunnies; it’s all about new life burgeoning forth. With the primroses now out in Cornwall, I can definitely feel the sap rising and a spring in my step. Now where are those chocolate Easter eggs?
Hotel Chocolat
Hotel Chocolat never fails to please and has long been a favourite of mine. Their thick shelled chocolate Easter eggs are legendary and remind me of how Easter eggs used to be when I was a child.
Click on the following link and you’ll find a more in depth review of one of their extra thick chocolate eggs. The quality of their chocolate is really good and they’re continually innovating when it comes to flavours.
Just Milk Extra-Thick Egg
Some of you are probably tired of me droning on about dark milk chocolate and how it’s my absolute favourite. Hotel Chocolat’s chocolate has a minimum of 40% cocoa solids, which is substantially higher than most high street chocolate.
This 390g Just Milk egg is perfect for me. The egg comes in two halves: one is made of their house 40% and the other is my favourite 50%. I’m saving myself for Easter, but I’m really looking forward to this. And yes, I’m keeping this one for me.
The egg contains 12 truffle and praline egglets in six flavours, which also sound most tempting. I might be persuaded to share some of these. The salted macadamia is calling to me already, but I WILL remain strong. The Bees Knees sounds completely irresistible too with spring honey, hazelnuts and caramel. You can buy Hotel Chocolate Easter eggs at their high street stores or online. £27
Praline Toasty Egg Sandwich
This 100g Easter egg isn’t the usual sort of thing I have for breakfast, even at Easter. But it’s more than acceptable later in the day. Needless to say, this egg sandwich is not your traditional fried egg with a bit of tomato sauce slapped between two slices of bread. No, it’s two slabs of chocolate sandwiched between a praline chocolate egg. A fun and novel concept.
The slabs of chocolate turned out to be more than I had bargained for. They are in fact half Hotel Chocolat’s house 40% milk chocolate and half praline chocolate, which is particularly delicious. The chocolate is smooth and creamy and the white chocolate streak down the middle of the egg gives another dimension to its flavour.
I was expecting the egg to be filled with praline, but actually it was hollow. It was almost a relief as the hazelnut praline is quite rich and sweet. Just about the right volume for two people to share after a hard day’s labouring.
Divine
Divine have a fantastic range of chocolate Easter eggs this year and I find their bright turquoise and gold packaging looks absolutely fabulous. There’s something to suit everyone, both in terms of taste and price.
Head over to their online shop to see what other Easter eggs they have to offer. Divine is a good option if you’d like to spread the chocolate love and ensure your Easter egg purchases are truly Fairtrade.
The cacao beans for Divine’s chocolate are grown in Ghana by over 80,000 smallholder farmers who make up Kuapa Kokoo, a co-operative that owns 44% of the Divine company. This means they share in the profits and can then invest in their communities.
All ingredients are Fairtrade and vegetarian. There are no articifical colours, flavours or preservatives to be found and only 100% cocoa butter is used. The eggs are widely available from most supermarkets, Oxfam and other high street stores.
Divine Milk Chocolate Easter Egg With Joe & Sephs Salted Caramel Popcorn
I’ve tried to be good and have been keeping the eggs hidden until Easter, but I really couldn’t help myself with this one. Salted caramel popcorn chocolate, I’ve found, is utterly divine. Why have I never had this superb combination before?
From the outside, the chocolate egg shell is deceptive, but open it up and you’ll find the inner shell is covered with popcorn thickly coated in chocolate. I polished this off, with CT’s help as soon as I’d taken the photographs. In fact it was so good, that I was inspired to make my own version: homemade Easter eggs with dark chocolate salted caramel popcorn.
The 232g milk chocolate egg comes with two packs of Joe & Sephs air popped salted caramel popcorn. All ingredients are natural and of good quality. £10.95
Divine Luxury Milk Chocolate Easter Egg with Praline Eggs
I’ve managed to hold myself back form demolishing this milk chocolate egg – so far! It’s made with the same chocolate as the classic Divine milk chocolate bars, but has the added bonus of containing a clutch of mini praline eggs. The eggs are wrapped with coordinating turquoise and gold foil and the whole thing comes in at 260g. £9.95.
Divine Toffee & Sea Salt Milk Chocolate Egg
This 100g thick milk chocolate egg is studded with sweet crunchy toffee and sea salt flakes. If you’re interested in the symbols found on Divine’s packaging and chocolate bars, you can find some of their meanings on the side of this egg’s box. West African Adinkras symbolise such things as adaptability, wisdom, love, peace and co-operation. £4.95
Divine Luxury Dark Chocolate Easter Egg with Tasting Set
This 340g egg would be my Mother’s first choice. Dark chocolate has always been her favourite and this egg is made with Divine’s classic 70%. To add interest, it comes with a chocolate tasting set. The set contains twelve mini bars of Divine’s best along with a guide to tasting fine chocolate. A different set of Adinkras are shown on this box.£13.95
Divine Cappuccino Chocolate
As an added Easter extra, why not get the coffee lover in your life a 40g bar of Divine’s new cappuccino chocolate? The bar has a smooth milk chocolate base and is topped with creamy white chocolate. Both layers are blended with Cafédirect Fairtrade Machu Picchu coffee for a wake-me-up and taste the chocolate moment.
We both found the bar a little on the sweet side, but the bitterness of the coffee offsets this to some extent and it makes for a pleasant snack or after dinner treat. £1.09
Bettys
It’s been a long time since I had the joy of sampling some of Bettys delightful chocolate. Some of you may remember the Tour de France bear or the oh so adorable chocolate otter.
Their chocolate Easter eggs do not disappoint. They are well crafted, elegant and beautiful to look at and the finest Swiss chocolate just melts in the mouth. Unless you’re lucky enough to live near one of their Yorkshire shops, you’ll need to purchase these online.
Milk Chocolate Orange Flavoured Egg
This exquisite large 300g egg is hand crafted from Swiss Grand Cru milk chocolate and flavoured with orange oil. The cacao beans are grown sustainably in Venezuela and are of the best Criollo variety.
I’ve had no problems with wanting to break into this one, I just want to gaze at it. The packaging too is elegant with a pastel green box complete with ribbon handle and matching ribbon tie. £22.50
Trio of Spring Flower Eggs
These three chocolate Easter eggs are presented most stylishly in a long differently shaded pastel green box. Three different colours, three different chocolates. The milk chocolate egg is stippled with dark chocolate.
I had to look stippled up as I was a bit vague about its meaning. Just in case anyone else is wondering, it’s an artistic term for decorating, using small dots or marks.
The green egg is in fact eau de nil white chocolate painted with a silver lustre. The decorative spring flowers are all piped by hand. Good Housekeeping praised the dark chocolate egg for its rich taste. The three together weigh 260g. £27.50
Sipsmith
In 2009 Sipsmith became the first copper-pot based distillery to start up in London for nearly 200 years. The gin is hand crafted in small batches and the notes say it’s a particularly dry one with bursts of juniper and zesty citrus notes. Although I’ve never tried it, I’ve been told on good authority that their gin is one of the best. This augurs well for the gin truffles shown below.
Sipsmith Gin Truffles
Sipsmith have teamed up with esteemed chocolatiers Charbonnel et Walker to create these dark chocolate gin truffles. Don’t they sound wonderful? Much as I want to, I’ve so far resisted breaking into them. I’ve tried gin truffles before and I can tell you they are extremely moreish.
I know this isn’t an Easter egg, but the 110g box of truffles would make a wonderful Easter gift for the gin lover in your life. Even better, it comes in a sturdy presentation box in the same shade of green with accompanying miniature bottle of Sipsmith London Dry Gin. £18
Chocolate Easter Eggs: Conclusion
If I had to pick just one of these chocolate Easter eggs, I’d find myself in a near impossible situation. Betty’s eggs delight the eye, Divine is ethical with interesting additions to their eggs. Hotel Chocolat is reliably delicious and well, who can resist gin truffles? Now which one would you choose?
