This triple orange chocolate cake recipe is one for the chocolate orange fans out there. It's rich and zesty with a divine orange chocolate cream cheese filling and it's topped with a sumptuous orange chocolate glaze. Perfect for birthdays and entertaining.
Cream the butter with the sugars until pale and fluffy. I do this by hand, but use an electric mixer if you prefer.
225 g unsalted butter, 125 g golden caster sugar, 100 g dark muscovado sugar
Grate in the orange zest and cream some more.
1 organic orange
Beat in the eggs, one by one, alternating with some of the flour if needed.
4 medium eggs
Sieve in the dry ingredients and stir it in with the yoghurt, orange juice and vanilla extract until everything is thoroughly incorporated.
200 g flour, 1 tbsp mesquite powder, 25 g cocoa powder, 1 tsp baking powder, ¼ tsp bicarbonate of soda, 1 pinch fine sea or rock salt, 2 tbsp Greek yoghurt, ½ tsp vanilla extract
Spoon into two 23 cm (9 inch) lined round sandwich tins. I use silicone moulds as there's no need to line them. Bake for 25 minutes until risen and firm to the touch.
Leave in the tins for 10 minutes then turn out onto wire racks to cool completely.
Filling
Melt the chocolate in a bowl suspended over a pan of hot, but not boiling water.
100 g orange milk chocolate
Allow the chocolate to cool a little, then beat it into the cream cheese.
200 g cream cheese
Spread over one of the cooled cakes and place the other on top.
Glaze
Warm the syrup in a small pan, but don't bring it to the boil.
50 ml orange syrup
Add the chocolate and butter, leave to melt for a few minutes, then stir until smooth.
80 g dark chocolate, 10 g unsalted butter
Allow the glaze to cool a little, then pour it over the cake.
Decorate with a pair of chocolate shoes, if liked.
Notes
I used the syrup left over from candying oranges. But you can buy orange syrup or make your own. It only needs oranges, sugar and water. Please note: calories and other nutritional information are per serving. They’re approximate and will depend on serving size and exact ingredients used.
