We Should Cocoa – the April Challenge

We Should Cocoa | 1st April 2011 | By

Spring  is finally here, it almost seemed to happen overnight. One day everything was looking pretty much as it has done for the last few months and suddenly daffodils were appearing everywhere and the hedges and banks were adorned with primroses and violets.

Chele’s lime challenge last month will be a hard one to beat. Bloggers really took to it and came up with some excellent recipes all of which sounded totally delicious. You can see the round-up here. Once again I urge any who haven’t taken a look to do so.

The big event this month is of course Easter. For me Eastertide food conjures up nostalgic memories of boiled eggs for breakfast, hot cross buns, Easter biscuits, Easter eggs of course but most of all Simnel cake. I love simnel cake, the fruit cake is nice enough, but it’s the way that middle layer of marzipan oozes into the fruit that makes it so special. And then, there is all that lovely marzipan on top complete with eleven balls to represent the 12 apostles minus Judas Iscariot. You can see my less then perfect attempt from last year here. You can perhaps tell where this is going. I love marzipan so I am choosing marzipan as this month’s special ingredient. You can find out how to enter the challenge here.

Ooh I love marzipan too, but what to do with it?? I’ll get my thinking cap on.

I love marzipan and even have a chocolate recipe in mind that I may make if I get some energy!

Wow, great challenge. I’d love to take part, will see if I can find the time for some Easter baking.

Oh dear … Hubby and I detest marzipan!! This one is going to test the old brain matter somewhat, can’t wait ;0)

The list of foods that I don’t like is pretty small, but marzipan is close to the top of it. Think I’ll forge a sick note and ask to be excused this month.

Great idea. I could kill for marzipan. Just so annoying some folk in the family don’t like it – esp hubby. I should have checked on that before signing the contract ;-)) Aha. Simnel cake? haven’t heard of that in ages!

I love marzipan but unfortunately my husband hates it. When we have Christmas cake we have to separate the marzipan from the icing and he eats all the icing and I eat all the marzipan. Maybe I can use the chocolate as a disguise though…

Glad most of you seem up for this challenge, I know I usually pick hard ones :-S

Phil – sorry you don’t like marzipan. I think we can let you off this time, but will miss your contribution as, so far, they have all been splendid.

Chele – oh no, first the dates and know marzipan, I don’t seem to be doing very well by you. Perhaps this might be your chance to be converted???

Corina – hope you can come up with a good ploy to make that marzipan enticing.

I was determined to do the next challenge, but I hate marzipan. Marzipan, liquorice and aniseed are all big no-noes for me. I will still look forward to the roundup though. I have added it to the diary 🙂

Yum, I love marzipan, it reminds me of Christmas! I will definitely be having a go and my entry might end up being more Christmassy than Eastery but you’ll have to forgive me 🙂

I’ll think hard but might have to skip this one – unless anyone is willing to be a taster by post and give me honest feedback?!

Or unless you’ll let me submit a chocolate and tea recipe because I skipped that challenge….

Sorry Jac. Have you tried homemade marzipan, it’s an awful lot nicer than bought and you don’t have to use almond essance if you don’t want to.

Aveen – glad there’s another marzipan lover on board 🙂

C – I’m not out to get you honest. I did know you wouldn’t be happy with the nuts theme. It’s always going to be impossible to please everyone. Am more than happy to stick a tea themed one onto the tea round-up if you’d like. I’m still getting lots of hits on that post.

Crikey, I thought tea was hard enough! I do love marzipan though…

I’m crazy about marzipan! Hope I get time this month to take part after my hideous horrible March!

I’m afraid I’m another one of those strange people that don’t like marzipan! Will have to bow out of this one mainly because I will be away most of April, otherwise would be happy to rise to the challenge as I’m sure I’ll find some taste testers somewhere 🙂 Look forward to May’s challenge.

KitchenMaid – so glad you like marzipan, it’s a relief to know I haven’t put everyone off the challenge.

Sarah – hope April is a much better month for you than March and even if you don’t have time to enter, it’s good to know there are fellow marzipan lovers out there.

Baking Addict – sorry to disappoint you, but at least you’re not missing out on something you really want to do 😉
