I thought I ate a lot of fruit and veg, but I’m finding that getting in the newly recommended ten a day is a bit of a challenge. We usually start off our mornings with a smoothie packed full of all sorts of nutritious ingredients. This carrot smoothie with ginger & orange ticks off one of the ten. Only another nine to go then. Juicing could be a good way of adding more fruit and veg to our diet. I’ve stayed clear of juicers, however, as I’ve heard they can be a bit of a faff to clean. But, cue fanfare, this may be a thing of the past with the all singing, all dancing self-cleaning Juisir.
Tis the season for blood oranges. It’s a short one and is generally over by the end of February. Blood oranges have a particularly good flavour, but it’s the startling colour that is so remarkable. I’ve made a fabulous blood orange curd in the past, but I’ve been wanting to expand my bloody repertoire; here comes my recipe for blood orange squash. I know I’ve given a recipe here for spiced turmeric milk already, but this being Veganuary and all that, I thought I’d give you my vegan version. Plus I’ve learnt a thing or two about the super spice since writing that post. Golden turmeric latte is not only a healthful drink, it’s also quite delicious.
I’m not quite sure why mulled wine has become such a classic British drink at Christmas. Apple cider is a more traditional beverage after all. I’m as partial to a glass or two of mulled wine as anyone else, but given the choice I’d go for mulled cider every time. It has a lighter, fruitier and more refreshing taste. You don’t need to add as much sugar either. Mulled apple juice can be served alongside or even instead of, allowing drinkers and non-drinkers alike to join in the festive cheer.
Since acquiring a decent blender, we’ve become complete smoothie converts. We have them for breakfast more often than not. It’s a great way to use our kefir and other healthful ingredients. However, it wasn’t until BRITA asked me if I’d like to make one of their recipes and try out their new water filter jug, that I made a kefir-free smoothie. This dairy free ginger green goddess smoothie turned out to be an utter delight.
When I first met CT, I was intrigued by the bowls of bubbling brown liquid lying around his flat. They had a pleasant fruity tangy aroma emanating from them and were covered with what looked to be some kind of large flat mushroom. This was my introduction to kombucha.
I make no excuses for posting this indulgent chocolate milk drink. It’s nothing like my salted caramel chocolate milkshake and I’m making no health claims for this one. It’s a rich confection full of chocolate and cream and is purely for pleasure.
Before ever I made vegan salted caramel sauce, I made this salted caramel chocolate milkshake. It’s delicious and completely satisfies any sweet cravings I have. Yet it’s made with raw ingredients, is refined sugar-free and is loaded with various superfoods. It puts a real spring in my step along with a self-satisfied milky smirk.
It really is too hot to think about food at the moment. I know we’ve not had much of a summer yet, but I don’t take too well to the heat; now it’s arrived all I want to do is lie in a hammock under a shady tree and drink iced tea – peach and rhubarb iced tea to be exact.
Age is supposed to confer wisdom, but the main thing I notice these days is that my joints are a little creaky. I try to alleviate this by getting as much turmeric into my diet as I can. This is the first time I’ve made it the star of the show, however. Building on my recent success with hemp milk, I decided to combine these two oriental power houses to make spiced turmeric milk.
