Chocolate and oats are two of my favourite things and together they work a treat. My chocolate coconut flapjacks are an all round winner and my recipe is now regularly used by friends. This month’s We Should Cocoa was to create something that contained both chocolate and oats. Read on to find eight fabulous recipes using these two ingredients.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll be suspicious of any product that lists palm oil in the ingredients. Production of this crop has been responsible for ravaging tropical rainforests in our never-ending pursuit of cheap food. However, not all palm oil is bad and in one of my occasional series on ingredients, I give you sustainable palm oil.
We were walking along the North Cornish coast path last weekend when CT spotted a massive patch of rock samphire. We didn’t want to be greedy, but it seemed too good an opportunity to miss, so we picked enough to make a meal out of. This dish of samphire noodles with marinated tofu was the result.

The chilli chocolate chip cookie dough I’ve made here is not for baking, no, it’s for pure indulgent eating in its raw state. And not only that, it’s also egg and dairy free, made with healthy ingredients. flavoured with chilli and cinnamon and above all else, delicious.
In the last year or so, the Happy Pear have gradually seeped into my consciousness. I’d heard them mentioned by Riverford, Jamie Oliver, in the press and through various food bloggers, but I’d never seen any of their recipes. When I was challenged by Iceland to make a two course meal for under £10, I went one better and created a three course offering instead. Broccoli cauliflower cheese was the main event. This was served with sweet potato fries for colour, contrast and carbs. We started with colourful corn on the cob smothered with zesty chilli lime butter and we finished with a very indulgent chocolate ice-cream. National Vegetarian Week seems like a very good time to showcase it.
Last Sunday our fabulous local independent bookshop hosted an evening of talk, slides and music at our nearby community centre. I made a few cakes for it, as I do. One of the four bakes were these rather decadent mini chocolate whisky cakes.
Mention the word Cranks to any of my old school mates and they will most likely heave a wistful sigh and start waxing lyrical about cheese baps, homity pie and date slices. It was the 70s and a new and trendy veggie cafe opened its doors in our very rural location and replaced the fusty dusty old fashioned teashop into which visiting parents would usher their offspring for a somewhat formal treat.
