French toast for breakfast is a bit of a classic, but have you tried Nutella French toast yet? It’s an indulgent way to break your fast for sure, but it’s oh so satisfying. Why not treat yourself this weekend?
Whilst we were away in the New Forest last month, I was given the remainder of a bag of wholemeal sliced bread to take home. This is not something I would normally buy as I make my own bread, so I was keen to use it up quickly.
Nutella French Toast
I also had some ancient Nutella that has been sitting in a jar since I don’t know when and I thought it was time to remove it and make a bit more room in my overcrowded cupboard.
Why not kill two birds with one stone and use up those annoying leftovers? The solution: an indulgent breakfast of French toast. Not just any old pain perdu I might add, but Nutella French toast in sandwich form.
Jolly delicious it is too. Eggy bread and melting chocolate is something that’s now in my repertoire. I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of it before. It’s even better with good bread and my homemade chocolate cashew nut spread. Or even my raw chocolate nut spread.

Tea Time Treats, hosted by Karen of Lavender and Lovage and Janie over at The Hedge Combers, is all about toast this month, so my very moreish Nutella French Toast is winging its way in that direction.
As both the bread and Nutella needed using up and I can never bear to throw anything away unless it crawls out of the door of its own accord, I am also sending this off to the No Waste Food Challenge hosted over at Elizabeth’s Kitchen Diary.

Nutella French Toast. PIN IT.
Nutella French Toast – The Recipe
Nutella French Toast
Ingredients
- 4 thick slices wholemeal bread
- 2 eggs
- 2 tbsp crème fraîche (I used homemade)
- 1 drop cardamom extract (or spice of choice)
- 2 tsp sesame seeds
- 2 tbsp Nutella
- 1 knob butter
- 1 splash rapeseed oil
Instructions
- Spread the Nutella over two of the bread slices, then press the other slices on top to create a sandwich.
- Beat the eggs, crème fraîche, cardamom and sesame seeds together and pour into a flattish container.
- Dip the sandwiches into the mixture, first one side then the other.
- Add the butter and oil to a frying pan over a medium low heat.
- Place one sandwich into the pan and fry for 3 minutes or so until golden, then turn over and fry the other side. Repeat with the other sandwich and eat whilst hot.

I live in France – what’s not to like about this? Please do tell though – how do you make your Crème fraîche?
Choclette Blogger says
it’s so very simple. Just add a tbsp or two of buttermilk to 300ml double cream and leave in a warm place overnight or for 8 hours or so until set. It’s soooo delicious.
Kate Glutenfreealchemist says
I love French Toast, but haven’t really tried it since going GF. Making my mouth water!!!!
Choclette Blogger says
Do you think GF bread just wouldn’t work Kate?
Kate Glutenfreealchemist says
It’s hard to know. The texture is quite different and although you can get some great toast, it reacts differently when it takes on extra moisture. I will have to give a few loaves a try and see where we get!
Bintu Hardy says
This is certainly indulgent Choclette. Send me some please.
Choclette Blogger says
I’ll swap you some for your almond porridge Bintu.

Great idea for using up your leftovers. I’m sure it would be tastier with your own bread and chocolate spread! Thanks for the inspiration I think I know what to make for the weekend.

Thanks Ros. You could always try it with peanut butter 😉
Susan@LunaCafe says
What a treat! I’ll try if with the homemade peanutella I have in the fridge. Delish!
Choclette Blogger says
That sounds delicious too. I’m going to be trying it next with my homemade cashew nut chocolate spread – haven’t tried making it with peanuts.
MotherWouldKnow says
There’s not much chance that I’ll have homemade creme fraiche when I make this, but as for the rest, I’m totally on board. I’ve been staring at the nutella in my cupboard thinking that I should be using it ….
Choclette Blogger says
Haha crème fraîche is a synch to make – really. Go for it, it’s a good way to use that jar.
Johanna GGG says
Hard to believe you have nutella that just lingers at the back of the cupboard! I am sure your chocolate cashew nut butter will not linger so long
Johanna GGG says
And it is a great idea for french toast – we do a vegan version that I would love to try stuffed with some nice chocolate filling
Choclette Blogger says
I’m not really a fan of nutella Johanna as I find it too sweet and don’t really like the ingredients they put in. My jar of homemade spread has already gone 😉
Choclette Blogger says
I’m wondering how you do a vegan version – will come over to find out.
Brogan says

Nor had I until I did it Lilinha. I will now be repeating it with my homemade chocolate cashew spread.
