Fancy a little indulgence first thing in the morning? Well, not only will you find some indulgent breakfast options but some surprisingly healthy ones too. Chocolate recipes for breakfast? Absolutely.
This post for chocolate breakfast recipes originally came about as a Breakfast Club challenge. Breakfast Club was started by Helen of Fuss Free Flavours in a bid for us all to take eating breakfast a little more seriously. Coincidentally (and it truly was), the same month’s We Should Cocoa theme tied in very nicely.
As the Breakfast Club host for November, I naturally chose chocolate as the challenge ingredient. Nazima of Franglais Kitchen, who hosted We Should Cocoa that same month chose bread. And many of those doughy entries sit very comfortably on a breakfast table.
Update – September 2021
This post is now an amalgamation of four posts. They all relate to chocolate breakfast recipes in some way, but also include a chocolate breakfast competition and a review of Dorset Cereals’ chocolate granola.
I’ve deleted recipes that no longer had a link, enlarged and brightened the older photos and added a whole heap of new recipes for your chocolate breakfast inspiration.
Chocolate Breakfast Recipes: Cereal
Chocolate Oatmeal Porridge
I kicked these sumptuous chocolate breakfast recipes off with my chocolate oatmeal porridge. It’s something I’m not likely to indulge in very often for breakfast, as although I have a sweet tooth, I prefer to at least start the day on a healthy note. Having said that, the chocolate was 70% cocoa and the porridge was made with a water & milk mix.
Vegan Snickers Smoothie Bowl
I do like a good smoothie bowl for special occasions. It somehow seems more civilised to spoon one’s breakfast from a bowl, rather than drink it from a glass. Nico’s vegan “snickers’ smoothie bowl has to be the most luscious one I’ve seen. I just want to dive straight in. Find it at Yumsome.
Black Bean Protein Shake
Now if you’re feeling you need a break from all these sweet treats, Elizabeth gives us this super healthy black bean & hemp brownie protein shake.
Chocolate Cherry Granola
Just look at this healthy chocolate, cherry, pear & pecan granola from Kate at Gluten Free Alchemist. What a way to start the day.
Almost Sugar-Free Chocolate Granola
And for another healthy take on chocolate granola, head over to my dark, delicious and dangerous version.
Cocoa Muesli
cacao nibs, raw chocolate and cocoa muesli from A2K – A Seasonal Veg Table
White Chocolate Pots
Breakfast or dessert? White chocolate pots with apple and granola from Sarah at Maison Cupcake
Chocolate Breakfast Recipes: Bread & Buns
Dark Chocolate & Prune Plait
A very enticing and rich sounding dark chocolate and prune plait came from Laura’s excellent blog How to Cook Good Food. A fellow member of the Real Bread Campaign, Laura is passionate about making bread and teaching others to do so.
Chocolate Challah
A sensational #GBBO inspired chocolate six-strand braided challah loaf from Lucy at Baking Queen
Pain Au Chocolat
You can’t have a post of chocolate breakfast recipes without one for pain au chocolat. This classic French pastry recipe from Apply To Face Blog is a sure fire buttery winner.
Chocolate Sliders
When I saw C’s entry from Cake, Crumbs and Cooking, my first thought was, what an earth are sliders? On reading, I found they are a very soft and moist milk bread rolls into which C has incorporated cocoa to make these delicious looking chocolate sliders. As if this wasn’t enough, she topped them with choccy philly!
Triple Chocolate Bread Loaf
An enriched bread dough, from me, flavoured with three different chocolates and three matching spices. The triple chocolate bread loaf is then plaited and shaped to form a twisty round loaf.
Rose Tea & Chocolate Swirl Loaf
Dashing Dom of Belleau Kitchen, went all romantic and in spending an afternoon with his loved one at Bettys tea rooms ended up with some rose tea. Well what could he do but bake this fabulous looking rose tea and chocolate swirl loaf.
Dried Fruit & Chocolate Chip Bread Wreath
A rather spectacular looking mixed fruit and chocolate chip bread wreath from Michelle of Utterly Scrummy Food for Families.
Apple Cinnamon Chocolate Braid
Ros of The more than occasional baker, really rose to the challenge and made her first ever yeasted bread. The success of this apple cinnamon chocolate braid has hopefully conquered her fear and we will see many loaves more loaves in the future.
Chocolate Crumpets
You can slather chocolate spread over your crumpets or you can make your very own chocolate crumpets. If you’re not sure how, head over to Supper in the Suburbs for the recipe. Emma says “chocolate makes everything better, including crumpets”.
Chocolate Breakfast Drinks
Hot Chocolate Smoothies
I was wondering when the hot chocolates were going to appear. Something is needed to dip all these buns and rolls into. Ren of Fabulicious Food went one better than a continental hot chocolate and made these healthy hot chocolate breakfast smoothies using the ancient Aztec ingredients of chocolate, chia seeds and avocado.
Chocolate Avocado Smoothie
This vegan friendly chocolate avocado smoothie recipe nourishes the body as well as the soul. It’s thick, chocolatey and packed with va va voom. I make it regularly.
Real Hot Chocolate
I do love a good hot chocolate and when I make it myself I like to use real chocolate. Sometimes I go vegan and sometimes I don’t. This one is dairy all the way, though there is a vegan option. I may have added some marshmallow fluff too.
Chocolate Pancake and Waffle Breakfast Recipes
Nutella Stuffed Pancakes
If you love hazelnut spread then these nutella stuffed pancakes are the ones for you. Nickki from Something Sweet Something Savoury tells us they’re”at their very best eaten as soon as possible. The experience of the warm, molten Nutella middle is quite something”.
Spiced Kefir Pancakes
Spicy pancakes made with kefir and topped with banana and chocolate sauce. The sauce is not only made with real chocolate, but also honey and crème fraîche.
Chocolate American Pancakes
These chocolate American pancakes are not knew to Angela of Garden, Tea, Cakes and Me. It seems they make a regular appearance at the weekend breakfast table and I can quite see why.
Black Forest Waffles
In a neat reversal of meals from breakfast to supper Elizabeth’s Kitchen Diary made these Black Forest Waffles for supper. She suspected, however, that some might like them for breakfast.
Other Chocolate Breakfast Recipes
Chocolate Shakshuka
It’s shakshuka, but not quite as you know it. This one replaces the poached eggs with goat’s cheese and there’s a little dark chocolate for extra depth and flavour. It works surprisingly well.
Mexican Mole Muffins
It’s possible that I’m the only one that likes chilli for breakfast. But just in case there are others out there, here are my Mexican mole muffins made with our own home grown chillies. They’re not only delicious, but easy to make and vegan too.
Nutella French Toast
French toast is a classic, but if you haven’t tried Nutella French toast before you’re missing out. You don’t have to use this particular chocolate spread, of course, there are plenty of nutty ones to choose from. If you fancy making your own, my recipe for chocolate cashew nut spread is a good place to start.
Chocolate Breakfast Granola
We’ve just had a parcel delivered from deepest Dorset. It’s a couple of boxes of chocolate granola from Dorset Cereals. Given that the operative word here is chocolate, I thought I ought to blog about it.
The timing is particularly apt as the chocolate in the granola is fairtrade and it just so happens it’s Fairtrade Fortnight (22 Feb – 7 March). Plus there’s a chance for you to win some in our very own chocolate breakfast competition.
Chocolate Granola Taste Test
I’m not normally a great fan of breakfast cereals, I tend to find them them too dry, too sweet or just generally unpalatable. To me breakfast cereal means porridge – in the winter at least. However, the Dorset Cereal packets looked rather tempting so CT and I sat down to breakfast with an unusual degree of anticipation. Chocolate for breakfast was a novel concept for us, but a welcome one. We were not disappointed.
The texture was good. Not so hard that you felt a trip to the dentist might be needed, but sufficiently firm so as not to turn to a sludge at the bottom of the bowl. For our taste, this was just a little too sweet, but nevertheless it had a good rich chocolate flavour, which is just as well considering the chocolate they use is 70% cocoa. The taste of coconut came through quite strongly on the plain chocolate granola which we liked, but our favourite was the one with added macadamias. Mostly because we love macadamias.
If I was going to eat anything for breakfast other than porridge or muesli with yogurt, then I would be more than happy with either of these latest chocolate offerings from Dorset Cereals. In fact it inspired me so much I now make my own chocolate granola.
Turns out, granola makes a great instant pudding. Just add milk and if you’re feeling really naughty, some cream.
Chocolate Breakfast Competition
Now my blog has passed its first blogiversary, it seems like the right sort of time to run a competition. Interested?
Here’s What To Do
Give me your most inspired ideas for a great chocolate themed breakfast via the comments link at the bottom of this post. Entries need to be in by 22:00 GMT on Saturday 20th March.
Judging
CT and myself will be judging the competition. It will be on originality but, more importantly how much we’d like to have your suggestions for our own breakfast. Our decision is final and no negotiation will be entered into.
Prize
The prize is a jute bag containing three boxes of each of the delicious chocolate granolas described in the previous section, along with a Dorset Cereals bowl to eat it in. I’m already feeling envious!
Apologies to overseas visitors but whilst I look forward to reading all comments and ideas, the prize is only available to those living in the UK.
Chocolate Breakfast Competition Results
Thank you to all who entered the chocolate breakfast competition and thank you also to Dorset Cereals for providing this great prize. I’ve really appreciated all the lovely ideas you’ve shared with us.
As you can imagine, it was really hard to come up with a single entry that we liked the best. There were so many good ones. I did think, fleetingly, of trying them all out and in an ideal world (one where I was a lady of leisure) I would have done.
My Chocolate Breakfast
I had my own attempt at being creative for breakfast this morning, but it wasn’t the success I was hoping for. Just take a look at the photo below and you’ll understand why.
I had some leftover purple mashed potato and thought this would be great baked in the oven with an egg and some of Willie’s 100% Cocoa grated over the top. The cocoa worked fine and enhanced the flavour, but the egg went all hard and rubbery. CT said it reminded him of toxic mine waste and was glad he wasn’t around for breakfast. Needless to say, I will not be awarding myself the prize.
Chocolate Breakfast Ideas
Where to start? Actually, Chele got it off to a really good start with her chocolate French toast sandwich. That one has to go on my list of things to try. Jacqueline’s chocolate waffles and chocolate milk also sounded rather yummy – especially with the imaginative addition of pear and ginger.
The sound of churros dipped in hot chocolate really makes my mouth water and I would love to try them, but perhaps on holiday with someone else making them. Thanks for the recipe though – one never knows! Breakfast scones from LPATRI11 were sounding like a healthier option until the chocolate spread (and cream) came into the equation. I liked the sound of these too.
I really loved Emma’s story of childhood bread and chocolate by the sea. That has to be the best setting for breakfast. Hilary’s chocolate pancakes sounded fun and her chocolate loaf cake rather decadent. As delicious as pain au chocolat is, it is indeed “fairly traditional”.
Janice is after a complete chocolate and sugar fix with her triple chocolate and fudge porridge. I dare you to have more than one bowl. Here’s my slightly healthier version of chocolate porridge. I liked Wendy’s idea of something savoury with a mole sauce, but given that I’m vegetarian, I wasn’t too keen on the leftover meat.
Suelle’s chocolate, chilli and lime bread certainly appeals to Oxslip. It appeals to me too although neither CT nor I are coffee drinkers. Celia’s honorary entry of a good hot chocolate appealed to me so much, I’ve just sent CT off to make one.
Oxslip’s mix of French sourdough, English marmalade and Dutch vermicelli is an interesting European take on the breakfast idea. More pancakes from Emma, but with chocolate sauce this time. I appreciated her talk of bolstering the sugary confection with some nutritious nuts.
I really liked Wenchie’s seasonally adaptable idea for a gooey chocolate and banana mix to accompany yogurt or porridge. Although I’m not a big banana eater I am very tempted to try this. Another vote for pain au chocolat from Hannah, but I think I liked her almond and chocolate pastries more.
As I actually like to have a fairly healthy start to the day, I also liked the idea of fresh fruit dipped in melted chocolate. Louise’s idea of chunks of chopped chocolate in granola sounds like a good way of bumping up the cocoa content of granola and a nice way to start the day. Thank you Louise for Orangette’s recipe. I will try it.
Winner
So, CT and I have cogitated and ummed and ahhed and tried to come to a decision – arghhhh!
Hard as it was, we both independently and without conferring, came to the same conclusion. The winner is:
Suelle – with her suggestion of Chocolate, Chilli and Lime Bread. Congratulations.
It combines my interest in chocolate, lime, chillies and bread making. I can imagine stumbling out of bed and being revived by a stimulating hit of eye opening chilli, refreshing lime and uplifting chocolate.
It’s also not too sweet. As much as we both have a sweet tooth, neither of us can really face a big sugar hit first thing in the morning. We’ll pass on the coffee though and have a nice steaming pot of hot chocolate instead. I guess I’m going to have to make this now.
And, dear readers, bake that chocolate, chilli & lime bread I did.

Your pancakes look divine Nickki and such a clever idea too.
Anaiah says
I love chocolate for breakfast. I mean, who doesn’t!? Chocolate porridge is a classic and I think anything with nutella is always a good idea! That vegan snickers smoothie bowl has caught my eye also!
Choclette says
I often have chocolate porridge for pudding it’s so good. And I agree Nico’s snickers smoothie bowl looks amazing.
Kayla DiMaggio says
If my waistline would allow, I would eat chocolate for breakfast every day. Especially the pain au chocolat!
Choclette says
Hahaha, well yes, there is that. And the pain au chocolat possibly isn’t the best thing to eat every morning. But there are quite a few healthy recipes tucked away in there too.
Janice says
So many wonderful chocolate breakfast ideas! I don’t know where to start, maybe at the top and work my way down 🙂
Choclette says
That seems like a very good place to start Janice. Thanks for your contribution to the breakfast feast.
Fabulicious Food says
A great round up Choclette, I know what I’m having for breakfast for the next few days! The sliders look very nice, will explore those first. Thanks for including the Aztec smoothies! x
Christian Halfmann says
How come, I didn’t know about this? Anyway, it looks all so lovely.
Caroline says
They all look great – I did so enjoy having chocolate for my breakfast that I’ve continued to do it long after the sliders have been eaten and forgotten. You’ve set a bad precedent for me 😉 (but I don’t mind….)
Chele says
Great round up and so many great ways for getting chocolate into the diet early on in the day ;0)
Susan heavenonaplate says
Sad not to have entered as this was a real challenge, but there are some great entries here, would make a great birthday breakfast too. x
Laura Loves Cakes says
This little lot would make a great breakfast…if not a rather filling breakfast! A great round up 🙂
laura@howtocookgoodfood says
How good is it to have a chocolate themed breakfast club. I have just been reading `Chantal Coady’s “Real Chocolate” book and she talks about the benefits of eating good quality chocolate in it. This I have to agree with. In fact, it isn’t that high in sugar and contains far less then your average box of Frosties I am sure. So here’s to eating more of it I say!
Baking Addict says
Excellent round up of chocolatey breakfasts treats. Now I know what to make when I’m stuck for ideas. Definitely no complaints about chocolate for breakfast from me 🙂
Fuss Free Helen says
Thank you so much for hosting, and I am so sorry that I did not get an entry in!
Lovely lovely round up!
thegardendeli says
Great round up. I’ve spent many years telling the children that chocolate doesn’t count as breakfast – this has changed my mind!
Kit @ i-lostinausten says
Wow! What an amazing yummy round-up! LOve it all especially the dark chocolate & prune plait! YUM! 🙂
Galina Varese says
Rose and chocolate swirl loaf totally wins my heart
Elizabeth says
A lovely round-up! I’m going to have to give this ‘chocolate for breakfast’ idea some more tries. 🙂
