For those of you not familiar with Liskeard in Cornwall, do stop by if you’re passing. It’s a quaint market town and it has a lot to recommend it. You can see some of the shops and faces here. Follow this Liskeard cupcake tour and get a feel for some of the things it has to offer.
I’ve had such a fun day. First off, I made some spiced chocolate cupcakes. Then I distributed them around town. The best thing was seeing the delight on people’s faces. And finally I got to try them out myself.
Well, it is National Chocolate Week and I couldn’t let it pass without doing something. So, I thought I’d make some treats for the good burghers of Liskeard and brighten up their day. It certainly brightened up mine.
I made twenty four cupcakes in total, twelve dark chocolate chilli cupcakes and twelve cardamom and orange milk chocolate cupcakes. I gave twenty away, but managed to hang on to four of them so my chief taster and I got to try one of each.
Liskeard Cupcake Tour
You may or may not know Liskeard, but if you’d like to follow this was my route around town.
Book Shop
First, to our most wonderful Book Shop, which we’re so lucky to have in a small market town like ours. For an independent bookshop they have a great selection of books, including a good food section. But if they don’t have what you’re looking for in stock they can get pretty much anything you care to ask for.
Alternative Therapies
Then to one of our alternative practitioners in Dean Street where I get some wonderful treatments. These allow me to cope with the on-going stresses of work.
The Organic Shop
Our fantastic Organic Shop had to come next. Again we are so lucky to have an independent store like this in Liskeard. It sells only organic produce and refillable eco cleaning liquids. It’s where I get the majority of my supplies, including my duck eggs and stoneground wholemeal spelt flour.
Sunshine Delicatessen
Sunshine Delicatessen for the little luxuries I can’t get anywhere else. On the rare days I get to work from home, I treat myself to one of the awesome sandwiches they’ll make up for you on the spot.
Taste Cornwall
Taste Cornwall is yet another shop we are lucky to have. It sells local food, all grown or made in Cornwall. It’s here I’m able to get our lovely organic unhomoginised milk from Helsett Farm. Raw milk is what we really want, but this is an excellent product and is the tastiest milk we know of around here. Taste Cornwall is where we get our locally grown and stoneground wholemeal flour which is produced at Cotehele Mill in the Tamar Valley. We also get local cheeses and other delights.
Liskeard Library
The Library with their dedicated staff are the unsung heroes of small town life.
Power Quip
On to Power Quip, our local tool hire shop where it’s worth hiring a strimmer for the pleasure of being served by such nice people. They are our neighbours and are always happy to take delivery of our parcels when we’re not around.
The Loft Cafe
Finally, The Loft, the best cafe in Liskeard where I was meeting a friend for lunch. It has great homemade food at reasonable prices. In fact, it’s always difficult to make a choice from the rather tasty menu and even harder to resist their excellent almond frangipane tarts. My friend also managed to snaffle one of the cupcakes at this point.

Great recipe for cupcakes, there is such a nice combination of ingredients. Cardamom & orange could give such an amazing flavour to the cupcakes!

Thanks Agness. Orange and cardamom is indeed a fab combination 🙂

Thanks Peacepudding, will let you know how it goes when I pluck up the courage to have a go!

beautiful combination of cardamon & orange! Re your comment about pastry, the key is knead it together as little as possible with the egg (mine is a higher fat pastry so comes together quicker) let it rest before rolling and you will be fine! Happy to offer more tips if you have a go!

Well Chele, I hold you entirely responsible as it was you who egged me on to do something for Chocolate Week (no pun intended).
I did Giles, I did.

Sounds like you had a great time 🙂
